Beta 1.8 is Here!

New file is attached to this post

After 2 long days that seem like 2 long weeks, I have completely re-written the backup & restore functionality in DAModder and put in place the new "session" based system that we have been discussing.

It should be for the most part, be fully functional for both backing up and restoring, but it is very much in an initial state.

Please, PLEASE, do not rely on this new backup & restore system until the bugs are shaken out! I highly recommend that you make a manual "backup" of your entire My Documents\Bioware\Dragon Age directory by just copying it somewhere else or zipping it up and putting the ZIP somewhere safe.

Each time you run DAModder, a new backup session is created automatically. This session is very small, and only contains your game settings files. In the future this will be configurable. Currently the system for auto-rotating backup files is not done, so the auto session made at backup will simply have the current system date & time used as a file name. This will keep them unique to the minute, but it also means it will keep creating new ones infinitely for now. You can simply go into My Documents\DAModder\Backup and manually delete the backup files at any time.

To create a new backup session by hand, simply go to the backup/restore tab and click Create New Session. A dialog will open up allowing you to specify what game data you want to include in the new session. The selections will default to whatever the "main" settings are. Select the data you want. Set the session type to Custom, and enter a backup name. You can use automatic but its currently not finished so if you do it will always create the same backup file, overwriting itself each time.

To restore a session, simply go to the backup/restore tab, select the session in the list, and click Restore Session.

Delete Session is not finished yet, and will do nothing. The files can be safely deleted by hand however. They are located in My Documents\DAModder\Backup

Known Issues

  • The global settings for backup sessions are currently not saved

  • The auto session system is not implemented. If you choose to create a new auto session, it will simply use the same backup file each time, overwriting the previous one. It is named Backup.1

  • At application start, the new session is created with just the basic Game Settings option. It creates a new session with a name based on the date & time of your computer, and will continue making new files each time. You can manually delete them for now.

  • Delete Session is not finished yet, and will do nothing. The files can be safely deleted by hand however. They are located in My Documents\DAModder\Backup

  • Probably more issues that my totally brain dead mind can't think of at the moment.

I want to state this again:
Please, PLEASE, do not rely on this new backup & restore system until the bugs are shaken out! I highly recommend that you make a manual "backup" of your entire My Documents\Bioware\Dragon Age directory by just copying it somewhere else or zipping it up and putting the ZIP somewhere safe.

This new system is very complex, and is bound to have bugs. Let's find them and iron them out, but please don't rely on it working properly at this time. Its a ton of code!

So how is the new backup/restore system working for everyone? Thoughts? Comments? Bugs?

Well I have been fooling around with various settings with the custom sessions and haven't had it crash on me yet. I do however, get a crash as soon as I change focus to another window if it is creating a rather large backup (mods, savegames, etc). This happened every time I tried to switch to my browser, either by alt tabbing or clicking on the window.

Unfortunately due to the large amount of processing and the fact that DAModder is single threaded, you really just have to be patient and let the backup finish. Its copying and compressing files like mad, and trying to shove that to the background is just going to cause issues.

Is that going to be the static state of how the back up operates? If so, some warning given to the user would be in order. I am pretty sure I wouldn't be the only one easily distracted by other activities while I am backing up my files. :-)

I'll look into what it will take to make it work in a separate thread, but it won't be for a bit down the road.
